For special nights out or entertaining friends, downtown Wilmington offers elevated dining experiences:

• Savorez ($$$) – Latin-inspired Southern cuisine in a cozy brick space. Their BLT arepas and sweet potato & black bean empananda are a personal favorite. Their brunch was voted best brunch in Wilmington so be sure to try that as well! 

• Seabird ($$$$) – Seafood-focused dishes with fresh, local ingredients. We love to sit at the bar, which is first come first serve. Dining room requires a reservation so be sure to book ahead. The seafood tower is to die for. Pro tip- you can bring your own wine or champagne and pay a small corking fee to have it served!

• Caprice Bistro ($$$) – Classic French and Belgian fare in an intimate, romantic setting. They have happy hour daily from 4pm-6pm. We love to enjoy a few snacks while relaxing in the sofa lounge upstairs. 

• Manna ($$$$) – Creative New American cuisine with a seasonal menu. This has to be one of the best fine-dining experiences in Wilmington (in my opinion). The menu used farm-to-table ingredients. 

• PinPoint ($$$) – Farm-to-table dining highlighting seasonal produce. I suggest getting there early for a quieter experience and attentive service.

Casual Eateries

Laid-back spots perfect for weekday lunches or weekend brunches:

• The Basics ($$) – Elevated Southern comfort food. Fried green tomatoes and shrimp & grits are must-tries. Their brunch is one of our favorites in downtown.

• The Half ($$) – known for its elevated, chef-driven takes on classic sandwiches. It’s casual, cozy, and perfect for a quick lunch that still feels thoughtfully crafted.

• Front Street Brewing ($$) – Craft beer and casual bites. The chicken nachos are one of my favorite dishes here.

• Copper Penny ($$) – Eclectic menu in a neighborhood atmosphere. A great place to grab a cold beer, burger and catch a game.

• Fork & Cork ($$) – Bar food with a twist. They sport a few outdoor tables is ideal for mild evenings and people watching. They were featured on Diners, Drive-ins and Dives!

• Rooster & the Crow ($$) – Cozy spot focuses on Southern cuisine with a twist. Their spicy chicken sandwich is the best in town and be sure to save room for their Banana Pudding! 

Coffee Shops

Fuel your mornings or workdays at these charming cafés:

• Hidden Grounds – This dinosaur-themed coffee shop opens into a lush, secret garden oasis where you can enjoy your coffee. They specialize in creative, seasonal drinks, including unique options like the Dino Campfire Latte and Minty Matcha. My go-to is the Lego My Ego

• Maroon Monkey – This travel-themed coffee shop in downtown Wilmington roasts its beans in small batches and serves creative specialty lattes like the Banana’s Foster (my personal favorite) and Cinnamon French Toast. Their signature coffee flight, “First in Flights,” lets you sample several latte options at once. 

• Bespoke – This refined downtown Wilmington café blends world-class espresso with an Italian-inspired aperitivo bar. Bespoke serves premium Counter Culture coffee by day and transforms into a cocktail lounge at night, complete with Negronis on tap and vintage amaro.

• 128 South – This cozy, historic coffee shop sits on Front Street in downtown Wilmington and has been serving locals and visitors since 2015. They use a manual lever espresso machine to pull rich shots and source beans from both local and regional roasters. Their menu includes creative lattes (like the Lavender Bliss) and seasonal cold brews, plus freshly baked pastries.

• Concord – This travel-inspired coffee bar in downtown Wilmington, located inside the Front Street Inn, channels the nostalgia of the Concorde jet with aviation-themed décor. They serve international-style espresso drinks by day and transform into a cocktail lounge by night, featuring espresso martini flights and a cozy courtyard where you can make s'mores by the fire pit.

Cocktail Spots (Craft & Speakeasy Vibes)

Perfect for date nights or entertaining guests:

• Earnest Money ($$$) – an intimate, members-only speakeasy-style cocktail lounge in downtown Wilmington. They specialize in craft cocktails, including classics like the Smoked Old Fashioned and Brown Derby, and also let you build your own martini with fun options like Everything But the Bagel seasoning and blue cheese-stuffed olives. The space has a classic, cozy vibe and requires a modest annual membership to reserve.

• Underfront ($$$) – This underground cocktail bar in downtown Wilmington blends historic charm, with exposed brick and century-old rafters, and modern design for a cozy yet refined vibe. They specialize in craft mixology, using house-smoked salts, fat-washed whiskeys, custom infusions, and in-house made bitters and syrups. Live music and an event-friendly layout make it feel like both a bar and a gathering venue.

• Blind Elephant ($$$) – The Blind Elephant is a tucked‑away speakeasy-style cocktail lounge in downtown Wilmington, hidden in an alley between Front Street Brewery and Port City Java. They specialize in craft cocktails made with fresh juices, house‑made syrups, and offer a huge whiskey selection (200+ bottles), plus low‑ABV options and mocktails. It’s a membership-style bar ($5/year), giving guests access to exclusive events like Great Gatsby parties, whiskey tastings, and live music.

• Dram & Draught ($$$) – They offer over 300 whiskeys from around the world, handcrafted cocktails, North Carolina and regional draft beers, and a curated wine list. Their menu changes seasonally, with creative drinks like the floral Weekend Friend and the spicy Tropical Fire

• The Ivey in the Alley ($$) – This tucked‑away cocktail bar sits in a quaint alley just off downtown Wilmington at 10 Wilkinson Alley. It’s known for its laid-back, eclectic vibe and affordable craft cocktails. Our personal favorites are the Strawberry Kisses and Harvest Moon.

• Banter ($$) – One of my favorite casual spots in town! This cozy, intimate cocktail bar boasts whimsical décor, exposed brick, and inviting little rooms (plus a charming outdoor garden), it’s perfect for unwinding and chatting. Their menu features creative craft cocktails, prosecco on tap (my go-to), local beer, and mocktails. 

• Rebellion ($$) – cozy brick bar, a lively patio, and seriously good vibes. Their nachos are a must, and you can wash them down with anything from one of 375+ whiskies to craft cocktails and 30+ beers on tap. It’s the kind of place you go for comfort food, great drinks, and a relaxed, fun atmosphere.

• Foxes Hole in the Wall ($$) – no-frills downtown pub with warm wood and leather interiors that channel Northeastern watering holes. Their menu highlights comfort fare like Boston-style roast beef sandwiches (sliced in-house) alongside smash burgers and garlic parm curly fries. They also offer a pared‑down drink list with cold “crushable” beers, wine, and simple yet satisfying cocktails, plus TVs for watching sports. Don't be fooled- they have one of the best dirty martinis in town.

• aView– rooftop bar and bistro located on the 7th floor of the Aloft Wilmington hotel, offering sweeping views of the Cape Fear River. It features seasonal outdoor seating with firepits, as well as an airy indoor lounge with floor-to-ceiling windows. 

Wine Bars

For wine lovers or a quieter evening:

• Wine Knot Sky Bar & Lounge ($$$) – membership‑based wine bar tucked up on the 9th floor of the Murchison Building in downtown Wilmington. It’s got killer views of the Cape Fear River and USS North Carolina, plus a curated list of wines, craft cocktails, local beer, charcuterie, and small plates. 

• Fortunate Glass ($$$) – cozy, elegant wine bar tucked into downtown Wilmington at 29 S. Front Street. They offer around 70 wines by the glass, over 400 bottles, and 30+ craft beers. The menu features tapas-style small plates, including build-your-own charcuterie, flatbreads, and sliders. With warm lighting, a copper-and-glass bar, and an intimate, welcoming vibe, it’s the perfect spot to unwind, and they occasionally have live piano—check their Instagram for updates on when to catch a performance.

• Market House Beer and Wine ($$$) – laid-back, river-view bottle shop and bar located at 119 S. Water Street in downtown Wilmington. They stock around 175 beers and 100 wines, plus offer THC and non-alcoholic options to enjoy on-site or take home. The space also hosts weekly events, from wine tastings to live music and artist markets.

• The Vine ($$$) – curated wine list, bourbon, beer, and small plates like tapas, cheese boards, and flatbreads, with half-price small apps on Wednesdays from 5 PM to 9 PM. The space feels intimate and thoughtful, with seasonal menus, wine tasting nights, and private-event options.

Best Shopping

• Cotton Exchange ($–$$$) – Historic building with clothing, home decor, jewelry, and local crafts. 

• Modern Legend ($$–$$$) – a must-visit spot in downtown Wilmington for anyone who loves eclectic, creative finds. This lifestyle shop offers a carefully curated mix of vinyl records, unique clothing, and one-of-a-kind gifts, blending music, art, and pop culture into a distinctive shopping experience. My first stop for fun gifts and unique clothing pieces. 

• Bloke($$–$$$) – men’s boutique that specializes in high‑quality, curated goods for the modern man. They carry premium brands like Faherty, Billy Reid, and Filson, plus shoes, backpacks, grooming products, and accessories. The vibe is clean, welcoming, and elevated, but still laid-back, perfect for someone who wants to look put-together without feeling like they’re in a business suit.

• Cape Fear Spice Merchant ($$) – gourmet spice and tea shop that carries around 300 single spices, custom spice blends, rare salts, loose-leaf teas, olive oils, vinegars, and boutique gourmet pantry goods. The space has a warm, aromatic feel that invites you to open jars, smell different spices, and sample items as you explore.

• Papercut Books ($$–$$$) – indie bookstore that carries a curated mix of new, lightly used, and collectible vintage books, along with socially conscious titles, and they also stock locally made gifts like candles and bookmarks. It’s the kind of place you can linger in, chat with the friendly staff, or discover your next favorite read.

Local Bakeries

Here are some of downtown Wilmington’s standout bakeries, each with its own personality and specialty:

• The Jelly Cabinet ($–$$) — A small, passionate bakery open only Friday–Sunday. Their menu features classic and specialty cinnamon rolls (including a highly praised Biscoff roll), blueberry biscuits, coffee cake, and rotating weekly treats). 

• Cravings – The Healthy Fix ($–$$) — A gluten-free bakery in downtown Wilmington that also offers vegan options. Their baked goods are made with wholesome ingredients (oats, fruit, beans) and no preservatives.

• The Peppered Cupcake ($$) — This gourmet cupcakery is known for its creative and unexpected flavor combinations, like fruit compotes, pepper jellies, and specialty buttercreams. Their downtown location features an innovative vending-machine setup. 

• Wake N’ Bake ($–$$) — A fun and eclectic donut shop on Princess Street, serving creative flavors like Fruity Loops and Oreo Cream, plus vegan and gluten‑friendly varieties. They’re open Wednesday–Sunday in their downtown location. 

Wilmington Riverwalk

The Riverwalk is one of downtown’s most iconic features, stretching 1.75 miles along the Cape Fear River:

• What to Expect: Scenic strolls with waterfront views, historic architecture, public art, parks, and piers. Perfect for morning jogs, evening walks, or weekend outings.
